BACKGROUND

Jeff Christian is a 19 time EMMY award winner and two time national recipient of the prestigious Edward R. Murrow award. He is also co-founder of Side Road Media, a production company based in Seattle and Los Angeles. At 15, Jeff began shadowing a reporter at KCCI-TV in Des Moines, IA and was then hired as a Photojournalist.  He won his first Emmy at 19 and was the youngest recipient of a national Edward R. Murrow award at 21.  Jeff has covered multiple presidential campaigns, filmed amidst the conflagrations during Ferguson, the upheaval in Paris after a terrorist attack, and secured a position with NBC News in New York.  He reached the pinnacle of his field and realized that as much as he loved his work in broadcast television, he’d rather tell stories that last longer than the news of the day.

What is required to tell a powerful story in 30-seconds to a minute honed his eyes and heart for telling longer and more complex stories.  As a filmmaker, his skills are superb, but more so is his ability to find the core of a story, how to capture character, and touch the heart of the audience.  Every good story has conflict, character development, a challenge, and a movement toward completion. His most recent work in creating a short documentary, called Sludge, addresses the scourge of ‘Forever chemicals’ called PFAS that pollute our water and food supply.  As gripping as the story is as a news feature, it is the story of one farmer that had the courage to address this harm that remains with the audience.

A good storyteller must weave the facts of the story through the life of a compelling character.  Jeff relishes the opportunity to study and understand the core of your story, the characters involved, and how to tell the story that activates your audience not only to act, but to hold you and your message with care and honor. But like any story, there is more to tell.

PRODUCTION HIGHLIGHTS

Fender Guitars

In 2021, I had the extraordinary opportunity to direct a short film with Mike McCready of Pearl Jam and Fender Guitars. McCready’s signature Stratocaster was re created in a limited series for Fender. It was a thrilling day of production listing to McCready discuss his process in playing music while also soloing on his Strat.

Words with friends

Shot in downtown Los Angeles, we created a New York street as a “oner” in this 30 second spot for Zynga games. Working with a skilled Steadicam operator and a brilliant director of photography, we managed to choreograph the blocking of people using Words with Friends on their devices, going about their day.

Sludge

PFAS was a term I had never heard of until nearly three years ago when my friend and editor, Mike, called to tell me they needed to test their land and water for the chemical. What followed was a two year effort in building a documentary, later premiering at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, and winning best documentary short at the San Louis Obispo Film Festival.

JEff and miguel bezos

The story of father and son, and how Miguel came to the United States at the age of 16. Now being shown at the Statue of Liberty Museum in New York, this is a story of a young man and his journey to America from Cuba.

NBC NEWS

For 19 years, I worked as a photojournalist, producer and editor around the US and across the globe. My last stint in television was at NBC in New York, working for the Today Show, NBC Nightly News, MSNBC and all manners under the peacock umbrella.

Amazon music

Shooting in five major cities in just under two weeks, I directed a show that follows a song from the studio to streaming. Partnered with Amazon Future Engineers, who’s goal is to increase computer science in classrooms, we worked with “kid” hosts to bring the show to students throughout the country.

NASA

Producing educational content at Johnson and Houston Space Centers for schools all around the country with the Amazon Future Engineer program to inspire students to learn more about space, technology and the Artemis Mission to return to the moon.

Shogo Ota is the man behind the Starbucks “Green Cup” design that were used in cafe’s around the world. I shot, edited and directed this short spot with Shogo who later when on to design an entire store with his signature single line art.
